Muguruza, Sharapova reach last 4

MARIA Sharapova is back in the Wimbledon semifinals for the first time since reaching the championship match in 2011.

The fourth-seeded Russian struggled for a bit but still beat CoCo Vandeweghe of the United States 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-2 on Centre Court at the All England Club yesterday.

The Russian was joined in the last four by Garbine Muguruza, who made it to the Wimbledon semifinals for the first time.

The 20th-seeded Spaniard, who reached the quarterfinals at the last two French Opens, advanced by beating Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland 7-5, 6-3 on Court 1.

Muguruza, still only 21, will next face either Agnieszka Radwanska or Madison Keys in the semifinals tomorrow.

Sharapova won her first major title at Wimbledon in 2004. She reached the semifinals at the All England Club the next two years, but only once more since then, when she lost to Czech Petra Kvitova in the 2011 final.

In her last three appearances, Sharapova lost in the fourth round in 2012 and 2014, and in the second round in 2013. She will next take on either top-seeded American Serena Williams or Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka.

Vandeweghe was playing in her first grand slam quarterfinals.

Earlier, Novak Djokovic survived a one-set shootout with big-serving Kevin Anderson to advance to the quarterfinals and keep up his bid for a third title at the grasscourt grand slam in London.

The top-ranked Serb beat the 14th-seeded South African 7-5 in the fifth set on Court 1 to complete a match that was suspended by darkness at two sets apiece.

It took 45 minutes of play yesterday for Djokovic to advance to his 25th consecutive grand slam quarterfinal with a 6-7 (6), 6-7 (6), 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 victory. He will next face Croatia’s Marin Cilic, a player he has beaten in all 12 of their previous matches.

“I was two sets down. To come back and win in five definitely gives me great satisfaction and confidence for the next challenge,” Djokovic said. “It was frustrating at times, especially today, but I managed to go through, and that’s what matters.”

Djokovic struggled throughout the match in trying to tame the 2.03-meter Anderson’s huge serve, but broke him to go up 6-5 in the fifth set to set up his victory.

Anderson finished with 40 aces, including three in the first game of the fifth set and eight overall in the decider.

Djokovic’s win completed the men’s quarterfinal lineup. In the other matches today, seven-time champion Roger Federer will play No. 12 Gilles Simon, 2013 champion Andy Murray will face Vasek Pospisil, and French Open winner Stan Wawrinka will be up against No. 21 Richard Gasquet.
