Murray and Verdasco eliminated
JUAN Monaco of Argentina ousted defending champion Andy Murray 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 on Wednesday in the second round of the Valencia Open in Spain.
The top-seeded Murray began sluggishly and lost his opening service game. He was broken five times in total, including twice in the third set.
"Juan plays very well. I know he has been injured for a while, but ... he played a very good, constant game," Murray said. "It is easy to lose against him if you are not on your best game."
Third-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain also lost his second-round match, falling 6-1, 6-3 against Gilles Simon of France.
World number 10 Mikhail Youzhny pulled out with a back problem.
Youzhny and Verdasco's exits damaged their chances of making the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals later this month, as they fought for the three remaining berths in London.
In other matches, Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay beat Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-3, 6-4 while Marcel Granollers of Spain defeated France's Benoit Paire, 6-2, 6-4. Frenchman Gael Monfils bested Eduardo Schwank of Argentina, 6-3, 6-3.
Meanwhile, in Basel, Switzerland, Andy Roddick came out on top in a big-serving encounter with fellow American Sam Querrey 7-5, 7-6 (6) while Roger Federer cruised into the quarterfinals at the Swiss Indoors on Wednesday.
Fourth-seeded Roddick sent down 16 aces and dropped just six first-service points against 22nd-ranked Querrey, who served 13 aces.
Federer, the No. 1 seed, eased past Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic, requiring a single break in each set to complete a 6-3, 6-4 win.
Tomas Berdych, the No. 3 seed, slumped to a 6-4, 6-1 loss against Tobias Kamke, the 72nd-ranked German who entered the main draw as a lucky loser in qualifying.
