Murray drops first match after injury
Wimbledon champion Andy Murray lost his comeback match from a three-month injury layoff in the opening round of the Mubadala Championship on Thursday in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
Murray lost 7-5, 6-3 to world No. 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 72 minutes.
Tsonga was to meet Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of the exhibition event late yesterday. The winner will play David Ferrer in the final.
Ferrer defeated world No. 1 Rafael Nadal 6-4, 6-4 yesterday. It was Nadal’s first match since losing in straight sets to Novak Djokovic in the final of the World Tour Finals in London on November 11.
Ferrer, who last week dumped his longtime coach Javier Piles, beat Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland 7-5, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
Murray, who hadn’t played since Davis Cup in mid-September because of a back complaint, kept pace with Tsonga until 5-5. Even to that point, Murray’s rustiness was obvious as the unforced errors accumulated. After Tsonga broke Murray for the first time, he stayed in charge.
“I was feeling fine with my body and the knee, and a win over someone like Murray is going to give me great confidence for the new season,” Tsonga said.
