Murray handed wildcard

Former world No. 1 Andy Murray has been handed a wildcard into the main draw of next month鈥檚 Australian Open, the tournament organizers said yesterday. The Briton, down at 134th in the world rankings after long injury layoffs due to hip surgery, has reached the final five times at Melbourne Park 鈥 the last of them in 2016 鈥 but has never won the crown. 鈥淚鈥檓 really excited to be back playing at the Australian Open,鈥 the 34-year-old said. 鈥淚鈥檝e had some great times in Australia playing in front of the amazing crowds and I can鈥檛 wait to step back out on court at Melbourne Park.鈥 Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion, last played the hardcourt major in 2019. He received a wildcard in 2021 too but was unable to compete at the year鈥檚 opening major after testing positive for COVID-19.
