Murray pulls out with injury
FOURTH-RANKED Andy Murray has pulled out of the Barcelona Open because of an elbow injury.
The British player needed a cortisone injection for the injury ahead of a Monte Carlo Masters semifinal defeat by Rafael Nadal on Saturday, but still traveled to the Catalan capital with hopes of competing.
Murray, seeded No. 2 behind top-ranked Nadal, trained yesterday but looked in obvious discomfort before organizers confirmed his exit.
Murray would have played Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero in the second round after receiving a first-round bye.
Seventh-ranked Tomas Berdych also pulled out earlier yesterday with a stomach virus.
Meanwhile, ninth-seeded Richard Gasquet of France rallied past Juan Ignacio Chela 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 to reach the second round yesterday.
Gasquet overcame an inconsistent serve to win the back-and-forth match after breaking his Argentine opponent three times in the deciding set.
Former No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero beat Xavier Malisse of Belgium 6-4, 6-2 in his first match since the US Open. The Spanish player had been recovering from wrist and knee surgeries performed in October.
Other first-round winners included Daniel Gimeno-Traver, Ivan Dodig, Simon Greul and Kei Nishikori of Japan.
On Monday, Santiago Giraldo of Colombia eliminated 13th-seeded Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil 7-5, 6-3 in the opening round.
Giraldo saved two set points in the first set and four of five break points in the second. He will play Albert Ramos, who beat Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 in an all-Spanish match.
All other seeded players in action on Monday advanced.
No. 11 Albert Montanes of Spain beat Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia 6-2, 6-2, and will play Benoit Paire after the French player rallied to oust Spain's Pablo Carreno-Busta 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-2.
No. 12 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain defeated Ukrainian player Denis Istomin 7-6 (6), 6-3, and 14th-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa beat Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
Also, 16th-seeded Juan Monaco of Argentina routed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 6-4, 6-1, while Spanish player Marcel Granollers downed Germany's Daniel Brands 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-1.
Blaz Kavcic, Robin Haase, Victor Hanescu, and Fabio Fognini were other first-round winners.
In Stuttgart, Germany, fifth-seeded Sam Stosur beat Maria Martinez Sanchez of Spain 7-5, 6-1 to advance to the second round of the Porsche Grand Prix.

Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia beat Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania 7-5, 6-3 to set up a second-round meeting with Stosur. Goerges will next play fourth-seeded Viktoria Azarenka of Belarus, who had a bye into the second round.
