Murray rallies to outlast Paire

ANDY Murray rallied from a set and 0-3 down to beat an erratic Benoit Paire 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 yesterday in the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters in Monaco.

Paire had 47 winners among a number of eye-catching shots but the 16th-seeded Frenchman also made 52 unforced errors. He had eight aces and seven double-faults.

“He’s a very talented guy and a great athlete,” said Scot Murray, who won 19 of 29 points at the net. “He’s very unpredictable.”

Paire also lost his composure at key moments, double-faulting when serving for the match and again on match point.

Second seed Murray next plays No. 10 Milos Raonic of Canada, who had 12 aces in a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5) win over 99th-ranked Bosnian Damir Dzumur.

Fourth-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka, the 2014 champion, reached the quarterfinals by beating No. 15 Gilles Simon 6-1, 6-2, breaking the Frenchman’s serve five times.

Wawrinka will next face eight-time champion Rafael Nadal, the Spaniard easing past No. 14 Dominic Thiem of Austria 7-5, 6-3.

Meanwhile, French Open prize money will increase by 14 percent this year, with the men’s and women’s champions winning 2 million euros (US$2.25 million) each — an increase of 200,000 euros.

Roland Garros organizers say that the total prize money of about 32 million euros is an increase of 4 million euros from last year.

The biggest increase of 20 percent is for players who lose in the second, third and fourth rounds.

This year’s tournament in Paris is scheduled for May 22-June 5. The defending champions are Swiss Wawrinka and American Serena Williams.
