Murray rallies to reach last eight in Monte Carlo

BRITON Andy Murray overcame a disastrous start to reach the Monte Carlo Masters quarter-finals with a 7-6 6-4 victory over Italian qualifier Fabio Fognini today.

The fourth-seeded Scot, who had never reached this level in a claycourt tournament, will next face either Argentine 12th seed David Nalbandian or Russian eighth seed Nikolay Davydenko later today.

The match was suspended yesterday because of rain showers and thunderstorm on the principality with the 21-year-old Murray 7-6 1-0 up.

Murray was 5-0 down in the first set before forcing Fognini to a tiebreak which he won 13-11 after seeing off three set points. He again rallied from 3-1 down in the second, wrapping up victory on his second match point.
