Murray tops Berdych to make Dubai semis

WORLD No. 4 Andy Murray wasted six match points and overcame a knee injury to beat Tomas Berdych 6-3, 7-5 in the Dubai Tennis Championships quarterfinals yesterday.

"I had a problem with it (the knee) since Brisbane and it's come and gone," Murray told reporters after a match played in searing desert heat in the United Arab Emirates.

"It was a bit sore right before the tournament. I didn't feel it at all in the first couple of matches, and then right at the beginning of the second set I felt it.

"It's not something that stops me sort of running around. I want to try and get rid of it, because there are a lot of the big events coming up."

Seven of the world's top 10 players made the Dubai quarterfinals and Murray, 24, went into his match hoping to improve on a 1-3 losing record against the 26-year-old Czech Berdych.

Murray could play top-seeded Novak Djokovic next in a rematch of their Australian Open semifinal. Djokovic faced Serb compatriot Janko Tipsarevic later.

In Kuala Lumpur, world No. 5 Agnieszka Radwanska won two matches yesterday to advance to the quarterfinals of a rain-interrupted BMW Malaysian Open.

The Pole beat Uzbekistan's Akgul Amanmuradova, who she was originally scheduled to play on Tuesday, 6-2, 6-4 in her first match of the day before easing past Czech Karolina Pliskova, 6-4, 6-4.

While results went Radwanska's way, it was the end of the road for fourth seed Jarmila Gajdosova and seventh seed Jelena Dokic.

Defending champion Dokic, threw away a one set and 4-2 lead against fellow Australian Olivia Rogowska to lose 6-3, 4-6, 6-7 (2).

"It was one of those frustrating days where I couldn't play my best tennis," Dokic said. "It was a game I should have won easily."

A delighted Rogowska will now face Greek Eleni Daniilidou, who upset Gajdosova of Australia 6-4, 6-0 for a place in the semis.

Third-seeded Peng Shuai of China came from a set down to eliminate the Czech Republic's Kristyna Pliskova 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. She will play fifth-seeded Croat Petra Martic in the quarters.
