Nishikori injured ahead of Wimbledon
JAPAN’S world No. 6 Kei Nishikori suffered a pre-Wimbledon blow when he was forced to pull out of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle yesterday with a rib injury.
Nishikori, seeded No. 2 in Germany behind Swiss Roger Federer and a semifinalist in 2014 and 2015, was to play Florian Mayer. The German advanced to the quarterfinals with a walkover.
“I’m very sad to not be able to go on playing,” said Nishikori, who took a medical timeout during his three-set first-round win over Frenchman Lucas Pouille.
It was not immediately clear if he would be fit for Wimbledon, which begins in under two weeks.
Meanwhile, Radek Stepanek and Dustin Brown have been granted wildcards into the main draw at Wimbledon.
The 37-year-old Stepanek, a Czech currently ranked No. 32, reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 2006.
Brown, a German currently ranked No. 87, was a qualifier last year when the 31-year-old stunned Spain’s Rafael Nadal in the second round.
British players Liam Broady, Alex Ward and James Ward were also given wildcard entries yesterday.
Among the women, wildcards went to Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia and Marina Melnikova of Russia
Hantuchova reached the quarterfinals at the All England club in 2002 but hasn’t gone past the second round at the grasscourt grand slam the past four years and has fallen to No. 163 in the rankings.
British players Laura Robson, Tara Moore and Katie Swan also received wildcards.
