Nishikori rises 6 places to No. 16
Japan's Kei Nishikori has jumped six places to 16th in the world in the latest ATP rankings published yesterday, whose top 10 remains unchanged with Novak Djokovic on top.
The 23-year-old right-hander rose from 22nd thanks to his 6-2, 6-3 victory over Feliciano Lopez at the US National Indoor Championships in Memphis, Tennessee, on Sunday. Lopez's appearance in the final saw the Spaniard jump 12 places to world No. 35.
Serbia's Djokovic stays world no. 1 with 12,960 points, followed by Roger Federer, of Switzerland, on 9,855 and Britain's Andy Murray on 8,480.
In Memphis, Nishikori breezed to victory over Lopez in a match that lasted just 67 minutes, not much longer than his outing on Saturday when he advanced to the final after Marinko Matosevic of Australia was forced to retire with a foot injury following the first set.
A well-rested Nishikori broke Lopez's service twice in the opening set to move ahead 4-1 then took control in the second by opening with another break.
It was the third career title for Nishikori, who also won the Japan Open in Tokyo last October to become the first Japanese player to win on home soil. Lopez, 31, was trying for his first title since 2010.
