Peng, Zhang suffer early Pattaya exits

Top-seeded Peng Shuai of China fell to Misaki Doi of Japan 3-6, 6-2, 2-6 in the second round of the Thailand Open in Pattaya yesterday.

Doi, in their first meeting, handed Peng, a hot favorite in a weak Pattaya field after making it to the last 16 at the Australian Open, her earliest loss in the southern Thai resort. Peng had reached at least the quarterfinals in four previous appearances.

The unfancied Japanese left-hander, ranked 104 in the world, stunned her Chinese rival by taking the first set 6-3. She stumbled in the second but regained her composure in the third, relying on her first serve returns to see out the match with a final 6-2 set.

Doi’s first quarterfinal since October 2013 will be against seventh-seeded Monica Puig of Puerto Rico, who beat Romina Oprandi of Switzerland 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.

Former two-time champion Vera Zvonareva of Russia ousted eighth-seeded Zhang Shuai of China 7-6 (6), 6-3.

Zhang served for the first set at 5-4 and 6-5, and had a set point in the tiebreaker at 6-5. Zvonareva finally took the set after an hour with a sharp backhand cross-court winner.

Zvonareva, champion in 2009 and 2010, pulled away in the second set as Zhang committed errors.

The 30-year-old Russian is on something of a comeback trail, after injury and poor form saw her drop from a top-10 career high in 2010 to a current WTA ranking of 189th in the world.
