Peng climbs 9 places to close in on top 20
VICTORY at the Jiangxi Open on Sunday saw China’s Peng Shuai close in on the top 20 in the WTA rankings published yesterday.
Peng climbed from No. 32 to No. 23, following her 6-3, 6-2 victory over Nao Hibino of Japan in the final in Nanchang.
The biggest mover, however, was Czech Katerina Siniakova, who rose 17 places to 39th on the back of her victory in Bastad.
Siniakova saw off Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki in the final of the Swedish Open 6-3, 6-4, with both players battling injury problems.
There was almost no change in the women’s top 20 meaning Czech Karolina Pliskova maintained the No.1 spot with a lead of almost 1,000 points over Romania’s Simona Halep.
Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza is fourth with pregnant former world No. 1 Serena Williams 15th.
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic dropped one place to fifth with Stanislas Wawrinka moving up to fourth in the ATP rankings yesterday.
Former world No. 1 Djokovic will likely fall further by the end of the year as he has already announced he will not play again this season due to an elbow injury.
The main move saw German Alexander Zverev climb three places to a career-high eighth.
Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer was the biggest mover, up 89 places to 49th following his victory in the Hamburg Open. And there was consolation for German beaten finalist Florian Mayer, who still moved up 45 spots to 56th.
Andy Murray remains top ahead of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
