Peng flops in final
TOP-RANKED Caroline Wozniacki overcame a thigh injury to beat eighth-seeded Peng Shuai of China 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 and win the inaugural Brussels Open in Belgium yesterday.
It was Wozniacki's fourth tournament victory this year, unmatched on the WTA Tour, and a welcome boost ahead of the French Open.
Starting sluggish following a tough three-set win over Francesca Schiavone late on Friday, the Dane found her touch and fighting spirit in the second set and made her class count against the 31st-ranked Chinese.
The only drawback was that she needed medical treatment on her left thigh in the third set before clinching victory. Meanwhile, Marion Bartoli was a doubt for the French Open after a possible thigh injury forced her to retire from the final of the Strasbourg International against German Andrea Petkovic yesterday.
The top-seeded Frenchwoman had her left thigh strapped at the end of the first set and threw in the towel when she was 4-6, 0-1 down.
Bartoli's retirement gave the 23-year-old, Bosnia-born Petkovic her second WTA title.
World No. 15 Petkovic won the Bad Gastein tournament in 2009.
Bartoli is seeded 11th for the French Open, which starts today, and is drawn to face Anna Tatishvili of Georgia.
In Nice, also in France, Spaniard Nicolas Almagro recovered from a sluggish start to beat Romanian Victor Hanescu 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3 in the final of the Open de Nice yesterday.
One day before the start of the French Open, third seed Almagro made a string of unforced errors and found himself trailing when the towering Hanescu claimed the opening set tiebreak 7-5.
World No. 12 Almagro eventually found his range from the baseline and outpowered Hanescu to clinch his 10th ATP title. Almagro is seeded 11th at the French Open.
