Peng has easy first round in Budapest
FIFTH-SEEDED Peng Shuai of China defeated Silvia Njiric of Croatia in straight sets in the first round of the Budapest Grand Prix women's tennis tournament in Hungary on Monday.
Peng won five straight games after one-all to take the first set 6-1. In the second set, Njiric, a wildcard entry, put up more resistance. Following three service breaks, the 44th-ranked Chinese player, won her own serve to take a 3-1 lead, closing out the second set 6-3.
"In the first set I was playing well, which was good as this is my first match after my illness that forced me to skip the French Open as well as Wimbledon," Peng said, who had appendicitis in February and later dealt with stomach illnesses.
Anna Chakvetadze of Russia, a former top-five player now ranked 102nd, also had an easy match in the first round, defeating Ukraine's Mariya Koryttseva 6-2, 6-0.
Catalina Castano of Colombia, a Budapest Grand Prix winner in 2000, qualified for the second round by beating Kristina Kucova of Slovakia 6-0, 6-3, while Hungary's Greta Arn rallied to overcome Darya Kustova of Belarus 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.
