Peng leads 5 Chinese into Pattaya 2nd round

TOP-SEEDED Peng Shuai led the Chinese challenge into the second round of the Thailand Open by beating Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia 6-3 6-2 in Pattaya yesterday.

Peng dominated with her double-fisted groundstrokes to beat Kudryavtseva for the first time in three matchups. The Chinese No. 1, who made it to the last 16 at the Australian Open, took just an hour and a quarter to beat Kudryavtseva — 86 places below her in the WTA rankings.

Peng, who also reached the US Open semifinals last year, was one of five Chinese winners on the day, beside eighth-seeded Zhang Shuai, Zhu Lin, promoted as a late replacement for injured fifth seed Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan and knocked out 2006 champion Shahar Peer of Israel 7-6 (5), 6-1, Duan Ying-ying, and Zheng Saisai.

She was joined in the second round at the Thai beach resort by Japanese rising star Kurumi Nara who demolished local hope Nicha Lertpitaksinchai 6-2, 6-0.

Fellow Japanese Misaki Doi also dented Thai hopes by defeating Tamarine Tanasugarn 7-6 (2), 6-0.

Two-time Pattaya champion Vera Zvonareva of Russia also moved into the second round of the hardcourt US$250,000 tournament, as the one-time Wimbledon finalist bids to make a comeback.

Last year’s edition was won by current world No. 9 Ekaterina Makarova of Russia, her first WTA title in her breakout season.
