Pennetta captures crown in Marbella
FLAVIA Pennetta claimed her first title of the year when she fought off a stiff challenge from Carla Suarez Navarro to beat the Spaniard 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the final of the Andalucia Open yesterday.
The Italian second seed, the losing finalist in Auckland, New Zealand, in January, had not dropped a set all week on the clay in Marbella, Spain, but Suarez Navarro made good use of her booming backhand to level the match at one set all.
Both players struggled to hold serve in the decider before Pennetta, 28, dashed the 21-year-old eighth seed's hopes of making amends for her defeat to Serbia's Jelena Jankovic in last year's title match.
Suarez Navarro saved one match point at 30-40 down on her serve but world No. 16 Pennetta sealed victory two points later and punched the air in delight before embracing her opponent at the net.
In Ponte Vedra, Florida, after winning only one game in the first set and trailing 3-5 in the second, Caroline Wozniacki was pondering elimination from the MPS Group Championships before a fightback on Saturday that put her into the final.
The top-seeded Dane dug deep to struggle past fourth-seeded Elena Vesnina of Russia 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 in their semifinal.
"I thought I was out already," Wozniacki said. "I said 'keep fighting, do what you can,' but it didn't look like my day at the office."
Wozniacki, the top seed and defending champion, will face Belarus' Olga Govortsova in the final. Govortsova defeated third-seeded Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova 6-4, 7-5 in the other semifinal.
