Pliskova soars in WTA
Karolina Pliskova’s run to the Wimbledon final has lifted the Czech 15 spots to number five on the leaderboard for the season-ending WTA Finals.
The 29-year-old former world No. 1, who was 20th in the ‘Race to Shenzhen’ before the grasscourt Grand Slam, collected 1,300 points and was the biggest mover of the week. Australian world No. 1 Ash Barty, who beat Pliskova on Saturday to claim her second Grand Slam, cemented her spot at the top of the ladder with a lead of 1,853 points over Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus.
Serena Williams dropped out of the WTA top 10 for the first time in more than two years. The 39-year-old, who has spent 319 weeks at No. 1, dropped rankings points at Wimbledon, where she was a finalist at the last edition, after she withdrew through injury from her first round match with Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Her withdrawal sees Williams plummet eight places to 16th in the world, her lowest ranking since early January 2019.
