Roddick beaten on return from hip injury
ANDY Roddick was beaten in straight sets by Argentina's Carlos Berlocq in Duesseldorf, Germany, yesterday in his opening World Team Cup match on his return from injury.
The 29-year-old American, ranked 27th in the world, was playing his first match in two months following a hip injury and he looked rusty, going down 2-6, 2-6 in 90 minutes in the Red Group tie.
The former world No. 1 last competed at Miami's hardcourt tournament in late March, where he upset Switzerland's Roger Federer in the third round, only to go down 5-7, 0-6 to Argentine Juan Monaco in the next round.
Roddick has failed to get beyond the quarterfinals of any of the six tournaments he has played this year.
In Rome, the women's final between China's French Open champion Li Na and Russian second seed Maria Sharapova at the Italian Open was halted by rain with the match delicately poised at 4-6, 6-4, 6-6 yesterday.
Sharapova is the defending champion.
The men's final between world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and world No. 2 Rafael Nadal was now expected to start later than planned.
On Saturday, defending champion Djokovic beat Federer 6-2, 7-6 (4) while five-time winner Nadal eliminated fellow Spaniard David Ferrer 7-6 (6), 6-0 in the other semifinal.
"We're both physically fit and fresh and ready to deliver our best tomorrow," Djokovic said of Nadal. "We have a great rivalry. He's the player I've played the most against in my career and there are no secrets. It's going to be a good fight. It would be good for both of us to get that trophy before Paris."
The French Open, the only grand slam Djokovic didn't win last year, begins this weekend.
