Roddick out, top seeds cruise

NOVAK Djokovic and Andy Murray moved into the third round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters with easy victories at the Qizhong Tennis Center yesterday, but Andy Roddick was forced to pull out after suffering a thigh injury.

Roger Federer also marked a winning return to action with another between-the-legs shot in his 6-3, 6-4 victory over American John Isner.

Federer was playing his first match since the US Open, where he lost to Djokovic in the semifinals, but showed few signs of rustiness as he moved into the third round.

The former No. 1 joked that his between-the-legs shot, which he has now successfully pulled off four times, was "the most consistent shot in tennis."

Also, top-seeded Rafael Nadal defeated Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 6-4, joining Djokovic and Murray in the third round.

Roddick's hopes of finishing inside the top 10 for the ninth straight season took a blow when he slipped while trying to change directions during his match against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain.

The 10th-seeded American had his right thigh taped but he played only one more game before quitting while leading 6-3, 2-3. "It was to the point where moving at all felt like I was getting stabbed in the leg," 11th-ranked Roddick said. "It's just frustrating. You've got to be able to get a little bit of momentum going and I just feel like I haven't been able to do that since April or May and a lot of that has been out of my hands."

Roddick has been trying to regain his form after struggling with a mild case of mononucleosis over the summer and suffering disappointing losses at the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, causing him to drop out of the top 10.

Second-seeded Djokovic of Serbia defeated Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia 6-3, 6-3, just two days after winning the rain-delayed final of the China Open in Beijing, while Murray, the fourth seed from Britain, defeated 465th-ranked Chinese wildcard Bai Yan 6-2, 6-2. Murray broke his opponent five times, but also dropped serve once himself on his way to victory.

Djokovic was also playing doubles later yesterday, partly to prepare for Serbia's Davis Cup final against France in December, but said he wasn't worried the extra matches would tire him out.

"I'm playing well, moving well, motivated mentally and full of energy. I'm hoping that it's going to stay that way," Djokovic said. "I didn't spend that much energy in Beijing. I won without dropping a set the whole tournament."

Djokovic next faces France's Richard Gasquet, who upset 15th-seeded countryman Gael Monfils 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Also yesterday, fifth-seeded Robin Soderling of Sweden beat Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia 6-3, 7-6 (5), 13th-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria saw off Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain 6-3, 7-6 (2), and American Sam Querrey defeated Michael Berrer of Germany 6-3, 7-6 (6) in a match that was postponed on Tuesday because of rain. Marin Cilic, the 14th seed from Croatia, was upset by Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-2, 6-2.
