Rolex Masters organizer eyes bigger crowds

SHANGHAI Rolex Masters kicked off ticket sales today, the tournament organizer said.

The ATP 1000 series event in Shanghai will charge the same ticket price of 60 yuan (US$9.5) as last year, said Juss Event.

An eight-day ticket for all the games costs between 2,000 and 4,500 yuan.

Tennis fans can enjoy a 10 percent discount if purchasing their tickets with a UnionPay bank card, the organizer said.

"UnionPay is our new sponsor this year and we want to pay back the fans," said Yang Yibin, marketing manager of Juss Event. "It's a big move for us as we never accepted any discount before."

He said more shuttle buses will be provided to connect Qizhong Tennis Center with major universities in town to attract more student fans to the tournament.

After years of ATP tournament in Shanghai, local tennis population, those who play tennis at least once a week, has swelled to 920,000 this year from 540,000 in 2005, said Jiang Lan, general manager of Juss Event.

"We can see the growth of the tennis market and I believe this sport will grow bigger in the city," Jiang said.
