Rumors swirl as Li talks of raising a family
IS Li Na pregnant?
The former French and Australian Open champion was in Shanghai yesterday and spoke about her post-retirement plans, which included talks of a child.
The former world No. 2 did not confirm she was pregnant, but appeared in an event sponsored by Swiss bank UBS dressed in a casual black suit and without her favored high heels — the only credible hint that she could be pregnant.
Li Na also said yesterday she had an “understanding with her husband Jiang Shan to raise the child till the age of 18.”
“After that, the child can decide his or her own future,” Li Na said. “Jiang Shan and I also agreed that we would not burden our child when we grow old. We will live in a nursing home and spend some happy moments with people of the same age,” said the Hubei Province native, who turns 33 next month.
Li Na said her mother took care of the finances during the early stage of her career. Jiang began to manage them after their marriage. “I’m not good at managing money,” she said. “I was focusing on tennis when I was a professional player, and rarely cared about money matters. I don’t do it even now...”
Immediately after the event, a local reporter approached Li Na and asked her if she was pregnant?
Li Na did not confirm or deny it, just saying: “you noticed?”
Li Na, who retired from professional tennis four months ago, described her current status as “relaxing.”
She said she attended tournaments as a spectator in Singapore and US, and plans to watch the Australian Open, which starts from January 19 in Melbourne, where a farewell ceremony has been planned for her.
She did however add that she plans to make an “important announcement” in Melbourne.
Li Na, who won nine WTA career titles, has spoken before of plans to start a tennis academy, key details of which were still being worked out. Previous media reports had indicated that it could be set in her hometown of Wuhan.
