Serena, Venus to meet in semis

SERENA and Venus set up an all-Williams semifinal at the Rogers Cup in Montreal with hard-fought victories on Friday, both coming from a set down.

The sisters advanced to their 25th career meeting. Serena beat Caroline Wozniacki 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, and Venus topped Carla Suarez Navarro 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The other semifinal will pit third-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska against Russian Ekaterina Makarova.

Makarova beat American Coco Vandeweghe 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 while Radwanska breezed past former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka  of Belarus 6-2, 6-2.

The 32-year-old Serena has won the past five matches against 34-year-old Venus to take a 14-10 edge. “I definitely don’t like playing her,” Serena said. “I’ve lost to her more than anyone on the tour, so it’s definitely not a fun match.”

Venus last beat Serena in 2009 in Dubai.

Serena, the defending champion and world’s top-ranked player, extended her Rogers Cup winning streak to 14 matches after victories at the 2011 and 2013 events in Toronto. She skipped the 2012 tournament.

Wozniacki, coming off a win in Istanbul, had won eight straight matches.

The match lasted 2 hours, 41 minutes, with Wozniacki taking control in the first set and building a 2-0 lead in the second before Serena started hitting the lines. The third set featured five service breaks, the last giving Serena the win on her third match point.

In Toronto, fresh from dispatching Novak Djokovic in straight sets, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga eliminated another of tennis’ top echelon by beating Andy Murray on Friday to reach the Rogers Cup semifinals.

Tsonga beat the eighth-seeded Briton 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4 while Roger Federer was extended to three sets in defeating David Ferrer on his 33rd birthday.

Tsonga said he did not have much confidence entering the tournament, but wins over world No. 1 Djokovic and Murray had him primed for the US Open later this month.

“I try to be consistent in my work, and I’m sure it will give me some rewards,” Tsonga said. “This week is kind of rewards for me, to play like this, to beat two guys in the top 10. It’s good, and I hope it will continue.”

Second-seeded Swiss Federer beat fifth-seeded Ferrer 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the late match to set up a semifinal against another Spaniard, Feliciano Lopez, who upset local favorite Milos Raonic 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3.

Tsonga will take on seventh-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, who edged hard-serving South African Kevin Anderson 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (6).
