Serena handles weighty questions with a smile

IT is not every woman who can laugh off comments about her weight, especially ones made to a room full of people -- but Serena Williams is not every woman.

On a searingly hot day in Melbourne, the world's media wanted to know if the slimmed-down superstar had handled the conditions better than in her heftier days.

"With your present silhouette, do you suppose you're able to bear the heat better than one day you might have?" a journalist asked coyly.

"With my present...?" a nonplussed Serena countered, a quizzical smile playing across her face.

"What I'm trying to say is you seem much more slender than we've seen you at other times," her inquisitor squirmed.

"Did that help you to bear up with all that heat?"

"No, I mean, maybe with the fat I would be able to, like, absorb more of the heat," the nine-times grand slam champion guffawed, a pink handbag daintily hanging from her shoulder.

"It wouldn't necessarily bother me, so I don't know," she trailed off, smiling to herself.
