Shanghai draw hard for Federer
LOCAL favorite Roger Federer of Switzerland is expected to face the challenge of Sweden's Robin Soderling again while top seed and world No. 1 Rafael Nadal may meet defending champion Nikolay Davydenko in the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Rolex Masters this week, according to the draw made yesterday.
In the upper half of the draw, Spaniard Nadal should not face much of a challenge before the last eight. Nadal's compatriot Fernando Verdasco, who is still fighting to qualify for the year-end ATP World Tour Finals in London, will probably face Russia's Davydenko before Nadal.
Two old rivals, Federer and Soderling, who played in the final of the French Open last year, are in the lower half of the ATP 1000 tournament in Shanghai and will have a bye in the first round. The No. 3 and No. 5 seeds will probably face Marin Cilic of Croatia and Spain's David Ferrer, respectively, in the third round before facing each other in the quarterfinals if they win through.
The tournament could be harder for Novak Djokovic who is also in the lower half of the draw and is still in Beijing for the final of the China Open today. The second-seeded Serb will probably face Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic in the second round and have to go past other seed players like Frenchman Gael Monfils, Andy Roddick of the United States or Czech Tomas Berdych before meeting the winner of the Federer-Soderling clash.
After yesterday's draw, nine-time ATP champion Tommy Robredo of Spain signed up Erke, a Chinese sports company, as his major sponsor. Erke signed with the Shanghai Masters last year as one of its sponsors to for five years.
