Shoulder injury dogs Roddick
ANDY Roddick withdrew from the Open de Nice on Tuesday and is in doubt for the French Open because of a right shoulder injury.
Nice organizers said Roddick is out of the match against Victor Hanescu after being hurt in last week's Italian Open.
The 11th-ranked Roddick said on the tournament website that he doesn't want to take any risks ahead of French Open, which starts on Sunday.
"It's running a big risk, playing on an unhealthy shoulder with Roland Garros round the corner and Wimbledon shortly afterwards," the American said. "I'm pulling out of Nice for now. Obviously the situation is not perfect for Roland Garros, but I still have a couple of days to hope for something to get better."
The 2003 US Open champion said he will not play at Roland Garros unless he is 100 percent fit.
"I'm not going to take a risk if I'm risking months and months and months of injury," said Roddick, who has never advanced past the fourth round at the French Open. "I'm not gonna take a stupid risk, if that makes sense."
Roddick pulled out of the doubles final at the Italian Open. In the singles draw, he lost to Gilles Simon of France in the first round.
Meanwhile, former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina says he has recovered from a hip injury and will play at the French Open.
The No. 27th-ranked player was forced to pull out of a third-round match against Rafael Nadal at this month's Madrid Open because of the injury.
Del Potro, the 2009 US Open champion, sent a message to his Twitter account on Tuesday saying his recovery was down to hard work. "See you in Paris," he tweeted.
In Brussels, second-seeded Vera Zvonareva survived an early scare to beat Kazakh Galina Voskoboeva 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 and reach the quarterfinals of the Brussels Open. Eighth-seeded Peng Shuai of China joined the Russian in the last eight, beating qualifier Abigail Spears of the United States 6-2, 6-0.
On Tuesday, French Open champion Francesca Schiavone beat Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 6-2, 7-5 to reach the second round. Fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia also advanced, defeating Anastasia Rodionova of Australia 6-2, 6-3.
In France, top-seeded players Marion Bartoli and Andrea Petkovic reached the second round of the Strasbourg International with straight-sets wins on Tuesday.
Bartoli, seeded No. 1, overcame problems with her serve to beat Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-2, 6-1 after breaking the Japanese veteran six times. The Frenchwoman next plays Elena Baltacha of Britain, who was leading 6-3 when Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia retired.
The second-seeded Petkovic made light work of Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-3, 6-1 in an all-German match.
Lucie Hradecka beat American qualifier Ahsha Rolle 6-3, 6-4. The Czech, runner-up to Aravane Rezai two years ago, served 10 aces and broke Rolle three times. She will next play Stephanie Foretz Gacon of France, who defeated Ukraine's Alona Bondarenko 6-4, 6-1.
