Soderling eases past Roddick to make last 4

FOURTH seed Robin Soderling booked his place in the semifinals of the Paris Masters with a 7-5, 6-4 defeat of Andy Roddick yesterday.

Swede Soderling's devastating forehand was too much to handle for the eighth-seeded American, who was on the back foot throughout.

Soderling, who will face either unseeded Frenchman Michael Llodra or 10th seed Nikolay Davydenko of Russia for a place in tomorrow's final, converted his fifth break chance, in the 11th game, to bag the opening set.

The twice French Open runner-up snatched Roddick's serve early in the second set before wrapping up an easy win with his 18th ace.

On Thursday, holder Novak Djokovic was knocked out by Llodra as Roddick, Tomas Berdych and David Ferrer secured the final three places for the season-ending ATP Tour finals.

The trio grabbed the spots after Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, who had to reach the Paris final to have a chance of qualifying for the tournament featuring the world's leading eight players, lost 7-6 (7), 6-7 (2), 5-7 in the third round to local favorite Gael Monfils.

Roddick, Berdych and Ferrer joined Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Djokovic, Andy Murray and Soderling for the London showdown starting on November 21.

Early stages

Paris top seed Federer struggled in the early stages before breezing past Czech Radek Stepanek 6-4, 6-3, setting up a quarterfinal meeting with Austrian Jurgen Melzer, a 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-3 winner over Spain's Ferrer.

Federer broke in the 10th game with a crosscourt-backhand winner and wrapped up the win on his first match point, putting paid to Stepanek and his striking black and orange outfit.

Murray received a warning for throwing a ball in irritation in a sluggish 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-3 win over Croat Marin Cilic.

Djokovic, who will lead Serbia's effort against France in the Davis Cup final on December 3-5, entertained the crowd at the Palais Omnisports by arriving on court wearing a bow tie, glasses and fake mustache. "It's just a little tradition I have here in Bercy for the last four or five years," he said. "I have been doing it because around this time here is Halloween."

However, Djokovic's smile had disappeared by the time the No. 34-ranked Llodra completed a shock victory.
