Spain stays unbeaten in Hopman Cup
SPAIN remained unbeaten at the Hopman Cup after defeating Romania 2-0 yesterday on Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez's singles win and an injury retirement by Victor Hanescu.
Martinez Sanchez gave Spain a 1-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Sorana Cirstea. In men's singles, Tommy Robredo of Spain had won the first set 6-3 when Hanescu quit with a hamstring strain.
Spain now has two wins in the group.
Hanescu appeared to be limping during much of the match, and decided he could not continue after losing the first set.
"It was a shame we could not have continued," Robredo said. "I thought I was playing pretty well."
Earlier, Australia's Lleyton Hewitt and Samantha Stosur beat their American opponents in straight sets in singles to eliminate the five-time champion US from final contention.
Hewitt beat John Isner 6-1, 7-5 while Stosur defeated Melanie Oudin 6-2, 6-4 to give Australia the win. The Americans won the later mixed doubles, 2-6, 6-1, 10-5 for a 2-1 final scoreline.
Australia now has a win and a loss in the group, while the Americans slumped to 0-2.
The team with the best record in each groups advances to Saturday's final.
Hewitt won the first three games of his match with Isner in just eight minutes, and faced a break point while serving for the set before hitting two aces to win. He broke Isner's service in the 11th game of the second set, then held to clinch the match.
"I played extremely well," Hewitt said. "John's always going to be an awkward player for anyone.
"I played him a couple of months ago (and beat him) so I kind of knew what to expect."
