Stosur sets up Zheng semifinal
TOP-SEEDED Samantha Stosur reached the Japan Open semifinals with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over seventh-seeded Chanelle Scheepers yesterday.
US Open champion Stosur hit six aces and saved all four break points she faced while converting three break points of her own against her South African rival at the Utsubo Tennis Center in Osaka.
The sixth-ranked Australian player next faces China's Zheng Jie, who upset fourth-seeded Petra Cetkovska of the Czech Republic 0-6, 7-5, 6-3 in a rain-interrupted match.
Second-seeded Marion Bartoli of France also reached the semifinals after beating sixth-seeded Ayumi Morita of Japan 6-2, 6-1.
Bartoli faces third-seeded Angelique Kerber after the German player beat defending champion Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand 6-3, 6-4.
In Linz, Austria, Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia defeated Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-4 yesterday to reach her first WTA final in more than three years at the Generali Ladies.
The seventh-seeded Cibulkova will meet Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova or the former top-ranked Jelena Jankovic in today's final.
Cibulkova, who last played a final in Montreal in 2008 and is yet to win a WTA event, dropped serve at 2-1 but broke back immediately and closed out the first set by winning 16 straight points.
Cibulkova broke Safarova's serve again at 4-4 in the second set and served out the match with a love game.
