Stosur sets up last 8 clash with Scheepers
TOP-SEEDED Samantha Stosur easily reached the Japan Open quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Misaki Doi in Osaka yesterday.
US Open champion Stosur broke her Japanese opponent three times in the opening set on her way to the second-round, straight-sets triumph. The seventh-ranked Australian player will face seventh-seeded Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa.
Scheepers rallied to beat Kazakh qualifier Yaroslava Shvedova 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5).
Second-seeded Marion Bartoli of France also reached the last eight after a 6-1, 6-2 win over Vania King of the United States.
Bartoli will face sixth-seeded Ayumi Morita next after the Japanese player beat Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 6-2, 6-3 on the outdoor hardcourt.
In Linz, Austria, qualifiers Sorana Cirstea of Romania, Evgeniya Rodina of Russia and Anastasia Rodionova of Australia reached the quarterfinals of the Generali Ladies on Wednesday.
Cirstea rallied to upset fourth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia 4-6, 6-0, 6-4, Rodina ousted No. 6 Julia Goerges of Germany 6-3, 6-4, and Rodionova advanced without playing after No. 9 Flavia Pennetta of Italy pulled out with a thigh injury.
Rodina, ranked 104th, lost in qualification but still made the main draw after Germany's Andrea Petkovic pulled out with a knee injury.
