Thiem out of US Open with injury
Defending champion Dominic Thiem announced on social media yesterday the 鈥渢ough decision鈥 to pull out of this month鈥檚 US Open after failing to recover sufficiently from a wrist injury he picked up in Mallorca in June.
The 27-year-old Austrian, who will also miss the remainder of the 2021 season, said he had been making a good recovery before feeling renewed pain last week.
鈥淚t has been a tough decision but I know this is what I have to do,鈥 he said.
Thiem staged a memorable comeback in New York last year, losing the first two sets in the final before beating Alexander Zverev of Germany in five sets.
The Austrian became the first player since Pancho Gonzales in 1949 to win the US Open final after losing the first two sets.
The world No. 6 struggled with form after the victory, taking a break from the game before losing his first round match at the French Open when he gave away at two-set lead against Pablo Andujar.
鈥淯nfortunately, I鈥檝e had to withdraw from the US Open and will miss the rest of the 2021 season,鈥 he posted on Twitter.
鈥淚鈥檓 really disappointed not to be able to defend the title in New York but I haven鈥檛 recovered from the wrist injury I suffered back in June at the Mallorca Open.
鈥淎fter some tests, they (the doctors) said my wrist needs more time, so we鈥檝e all agreed on being conservative and to give my wrist some time to recover... It has been a tough decision but I know this is what I have to do.鈥
On Sunday, another former champion Roger Federer also pulled out of the US Open. The 40-year-old said he needed further knee surgery and admitted he 鈥渨ill be out for many months.鈥
This is the second straight year that the defending champion at Flushing Meadows has withdrawn from the event after Rafael Nadal skipped the 2020 edition due to concerns over the coronavirus.
Nadal and Novak Djokovic, who along with Federer are the 鈥淏ig Three鈥 of tennis, are both absent from the ongoing Masters tournament in Cincinnati which traditionally serves as a dress rehearsal before the US Open.
The 35-year-old Nadal has been suffering from a left foot injury since his semifinal exit at the hands of Djokovic at the French Open in June.
The Serb, meanwhile, who has won all three majors this season and is eager to make a clean sweep in New York, has not taken to the court since the Tokyo Olympics.
The US Open runs from August 30 to September 12.
