Tomic climbs to 70 in rankings after Bogota victory
AUSTRALIA’S Bernard Tomic climbed from 124 to 70 in the latest ATP rankings published yesterday on the strength of his second career win in Bogota.
The 21-year-old defeated defending champion Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (4) in the final of the Colombia Open on Sunday to add to his victory at the Sydney International in 2014.
Tomic’s career had taken a downward turn since making the fourth round of the 2012 Australian Open, a decline which saw his ATP ranking slip from 27.
Tomic’s struggles have been magnified by the rapid rise of 19-year-old Nick Kyrgios, who stunned 14-time grand slam champion Rafael Nadal to also reach the Wimbledon last eight earlier this month.
The only change in the top 10 headed by Serbia’s Novak Djokovic involved Spain’s David Ferrer, who jumped one place into sixth.
Meanwhile, Caroline Wozniacki, who opened her 2014 account with victory in Istanbul, climbed two places to 13 in the latest WTA rankings published yesterday.
The former world No. 1 has now won a WTA title every year for the last seven years, winning her first three in 2008, three more in 2009, six in 2010, six in 2011, two in 2012, one in 2013 and now one in 2014.
Wozniacki’s 6-1, 6-1 win over Italian Roberta Vinci on Sunday came on the same day as her ex-fiance, Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy, claimed the British Open.
