TOP-SEEDED Alize Cornet rallied to beat Mariana Duque Marino of Colombia 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 yesterday in the first round of the Nuernberger Gastein Ladies in Bad Gastein, Austria.
The 28th-ranked Frenchwoman dropped her serve three times in the opening set and trailed 5-6 in the second before turning the match around.
Cornet will next play Patricia Mayr of Austria, who defeated Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain 6-3, 6-3.
Eighth-seeded Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic, who reached the final in Bad Gastein last year, was upset by Nuria Llagostera Vives of Spain 2-6, 2-6.
Also yesterday, No. 4 Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic beat Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania 7-6 (5), 6-3; and German No. 7 Anna-Lena Groenefeld defeated Zuzana Ondraskova of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 6-3; and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova beat fellow Czech Sandra Zahlavova 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
In Portoroz, Slovenia, top-ranked Dinara Safina easily advanced to the second round of the Slovenia Open on Monday by beating local favorite Tadeja Majeric 6-0, 6-4.
Safina of Russia was playing her first match since losing in the Wimbledon semifinals to Venus Williams.
Also, third-seeded Kaia Kanepi of Estonia was upset by Olga Govortsova of Belarus, 1-6, 2-6.
In Indianapolis, American Sam Querrey beat Arnaud Clement of France 6-3, 6-4 in the opening-round of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships on Monday.
"It'd be great to be seeded at the US Open - that's kind of a little short-term goal," said Querrey, ranked No. 37 in the world. "Hopefully, I can do better than that and after this hardcourt season - after the end of the year - be ranked in the 20s or Top 20 maybe."
Querrey broke Clement twice - once in each set - and held each of his 10 service games at the first tournament of the USTA's US Open Series.
The No. 3 seed will play local favorite Rajeev Ram next. Ram beat Querrey in the finals of the ATP Hall of Fame Championship in Newport, Rhode Island, last week.
