TOP seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia was ousted in the second round by Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain 7-6 (7), 2-6, 6-1 in the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, Germany, on Thursday.
Gimeno-Traver hit a dozen aces and seven double faults in beating Davydenko, against whom he won only four games last year in Croatia.
Fourth-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero finished off Horacio Zeballos of Argentina 6-7 (1), 7-6 (3), 6-2 in a match which was postponed the night before because of darkness at the start of the second-set tiebreaker. Ferrero will take on Gilles Simon of France in the final eight.
No. 3-seeded Gael Monfils denied Spanish qualifier Pablo Andujar his first ATP quarterfinals by 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, and will next face local hope Florian Mayer of Germany, who beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-3, 6-1.
Switzerland's Marco Chiudinelli beat Germany's Bjorn Phau 7-6 (3), 6-3 to reach his first quarterfinals of the season.
In Bastad, two-time champion Tommy Robredo reached the quarterfinals of the Swedish Open for the eighth time in 10 appearances.
The fifth-seeded Robredo, champion in 2006 and 2008, came back to beat Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to set up a quarterfinal with Fernando Verdasco.
No. 2-seeded Verdasco, seeking his fourth final on clay this year, was a step closer after handling Stephane Robert of France 6-1, 6-1 without offering a break point. The left-handed Spaniard played his first match in the tournament after getting a bye in the first round.
Another seeded Spaniard, No. 4 Nicolas Almagro, beat Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 6-4, 6-4 with seven aces.
The French Open quarterfinalist will play Croatia's Franco Skugor, who will be in his first ATP quarterfinals after defeating Sweden's Ervin Eleskovic 6-2, 6-3.
