Triumphant Murray closes in on world No. 1 Djokovic
ANDY Murray’s third win on the bounce in Vienna lifted him up to 10,985 points in the latest ATP rankings published yesterday and one win away from toppling No. 1 Novak Djokovic.
Murray’s 6-3, 7-6 (6) defeat of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Austria was his third win of the month after picking up the China Open and Shanghai Rolex Masters. If the 29-year-old Scot manages to extend his red-hot form into this week’s Paris Masters he will become No. 1 with success at Bercy next Sunday and Djokovic fails to make the final. Meanwhile, surprise WTA Finals winner Dominika Cibulkova has climbed three places into fifth in the latest world rankings. The Slovakian player pulled off a stunning 6-3, 6-4 defeat of world No. 1 Angelique Kerber at the end-of-season event in Singapore. Runner-up at the 2014 Australian Open Cibulkova was the only major mover inside the top 10 dominated by Kerber with Serena williams in second place.
