Tsonga into semis as flu hits Berdych
FRENCHMAN Jo-Wilfried Tsonga reached the World Indoor Tournament semifinals in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, without hitting a ball yesterday after fourth seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic pulled out suffering with flu.
Tsonga will meet either Croat Ivan Ljubicic or Marco Baghdatis of Cyprus in today's semifinal.
Holder Robin Soderling of Sweden plays Russian Mikhail Youzhny and Marin Cilic of Croatia takes on Romania's Victor Troicki in the remaining quarterfinal ties.
On Thursday, Soderling finally ended his winless run against Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany in another scrap. The top-seeded Soderling had lost his three previous matches against Kohlschreiber, but prevailed this time after more than two hours 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 (7).
In San Jose, California, defending champion and top seed Fernando Verdasco held off the hard-hitting Ivo Karlovic 7-5, 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals of the SAP Open on Thursday.
Also advancing with the Spaniard were second-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils, who outlasted American Robert Kendrick 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, and fifth-seeded Uzbek Denis Istomin, who edged American Michael Russell 7-6 (7), 7-6 (4).
Seventh-seeded Australian Lleyton Hewitt displayed his usual fighting spirit to rally for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over home favorite Brian Dabul, while Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro continued his comeback from injury with a 6-1, 7-6 (1) win over Slovakia's Lukas Lacko.
However, wildcard Tim Smyczek, ranked 172nd, caused the biggest upset of the day when the American battled to a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Japanese eighth seed Kei Nishikori.
Del Potro, the 2009 US Open champion who is currently ranked 484th after struggling with a wrist injury, will face Hewitt, the former world No. 1.
