US, Italy storm into Fed Cup semis
THE United States secured a spot in the Fed Cup semifinals after teenager Melanie Oudin beat Julie Coin in Lievin yesterday to give the visiting Americans an unassailable 3-0 lead over France.
Oudin overcame Coin 7-6 (3), 6-4 in just over two hours in the first reverse singles match.
The US will next face either Russia or Serbia on April 24-25. The Serbs took a 2-1 lead after Jelena Jankovic outlasted Svetlana Kuznetsova in the first reverse singles 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in Belgrade.
The 18-year-old Oudin broke Coin in the fifth game of the second set and clinched the match when the Frenchwoman shanked a forehand.
Oudin had saved two break points at 5-5 in the first to force the tiebreaker, where she hit three straight winners to close out the set.
Alize Cornet had been scheduled to face Oudin but captain Nicolas Escude decided to replace her with Coin after the Frenchwoman admitted she struggled with her nerves against Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the opening singles on Saturday. Mattek-Sands rallied from 2-5 down in the first to win in straight sets, giving Cornet her sixth loss in six Fed Cup singles matches.
In Kharkiv, Ukraine, Francesca Schiavone rallied to stun Kateryna Bondarenko in the last singles match yesterday, to give defending champion Italy an unbeatable 3-1 lead in their quarterfinal.
Schiavone, who lost her first singles match to Kateryna's sister Alona, came back from losing the first set to ease to a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Earlier, Flavia Pennetta beat Alona 7-5, 7-6 (3) to set Italy on course to take on the Czech Republic or Germany.
In Brno, Czech Republic, Lucie Hradecka beat Andrea Petkovic 6-1, 7-6 (5) in the first reverse singles to give the Czechs a 2-1 lead over Germany in their quarterfinal.
Hradecka was making her Fed Cup debut after replacing the Lucie Safarova, who struggled with a fever and lost to Anna-Lena Groenefeld 2-6, 2-6 on Saturday.
