US takes 1-0 lead
THE United States opened up a 1-0 lead over Germany in the World Team Cup in Duesseldorf on Sunday when big-serving Sam Querrey came from a set down to beat Rainer Schuettler 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Schuettler, ranked 31st in the world, continued his error-ridden season against Querrey despite breezing through the first set 6-2 with his opponent, ranked 29 places below him, struggling with his first serve.
Querrey improved his first delivery percentage from 48 to 63 and added three aces as he chased Schuettler, 33, around the court, clinching the second set 6-4.
The world No. 60 lifted his game another notch to grab the third 6-2.
"There will be other good days again," said Schuettler, a Wimbledon semifinalist last year who has had a disappointing season so far.
In the other red group matches, France and defending champion Sweden were level 1-1.
World No. 9 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also came from a set down to beat Andreas Vinciguerra 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
