Venus Williams wins at Australian Open
VENUS Williams has beaten Francesca Schiavone of Italy 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
After an exchange of service breaks to open the final set, the sixth-seeded Williams broke Schiavone's service again in the fourth and sixth games to take a 5-1 lead. Her win today extends a streak that has seen at least one American woman in the Australian Open quarterfinals every year since 1977.
Venus could play her younger sister Serena in the semifinals. Top-seeded and defending champion Serena Williams, who has won four Australian titles, was to play Australian Sam Stosur later Monday in the fourth round.
