Verdasco fires Spain to 1-0 lead

Fernando Verdasco beat Alexandr Dolgopolov 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 yesterday to give Spain a 1-0 lead over Ukraine in their Davis Cup World Group playoff.

Rafael Nadal had a chance to double Spain’s lead when he played Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second singles later.

Verdasco shook off a poor start and overcame a 0-3 deficit in the third set to grab the first point on the Caja Magica’s outdoor red claycourt in Madrid.

Nadal last played for Spain in December 2011, when he won the decisive point of the final against Argentina to earn Spain its fifth title.

Nadal’s absence has been due in part to a knee injury that sidelined him for seven months last season.

In Tokyo, Kei Nishikori gave Japan the lead before Santiago Giraldo evened the series for Colombia at 1-1 after yesterday’s opening singles in the Davis Cup playoffs.

Nishikori, who missed Japan’s matches against Indonesia in February and South Korea in April due to injury, beat Alejandro Falla 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the best-of-five series. But Giraldo earned a point for Colombia by defeating Go Soeda 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 at Ariake Colosseum.

Nishikori and Soeda will team up in the doubles against Juan-Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah today.

The winner will play in next year’s World Group.
