Wawrinka meets Djokovic in Paris Masters quarters
Defending champion David Ferrer and Stanislas Wawrinka won in straight sets yesterday to reach the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters.
Ferrer beat Gilles Simon of France 6-2, 6-3, while Wawrinka defeated Nicolas Almagro of Spain 6-3, 6-2.
Wawrinka stayed in contention for one of the two remaining ATP finals spots.
The seventh-seed rallied from a 1-3 deficit in the first set and broke Almagro twice in the second. Wawrinka outplayed Almagro, hitting 26 winners to 13 for the Spaniard and making only 15 unforced errors.
The Swiss No. 2 set up a quarterfinal against world No. 2 Novak Djokovic after the Serbian pushed back the challenge of American 13th seed John Isner before emerging with a 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Wawrinka will join his Olympic double’s partner Roger Federer for the season’s grande finale in London, should either Frenchman Richard Gasquet or Milos Raonic of Canada lose their third-round matches.
