Wickmayer qualifies for main draw
US Open semifinalist Yanina Wickmayer was placed in the same quarter of the draw as fellow Belgians Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin after yesterday's final round of qualifying for the Australian Open.
The world No. 16 was forced to go through the qualifying competition, to decide the last 16 men and 12 women, because she was ineligible to enter the main draw for the registrations in November due to a suspension, a ban which has since been revoked.
Wickmayer safely booked her place in the main draw with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Spain's Lourdes Dominguez Lino and will face Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru.
She could face Henin in the fourth round and Clijsters in the quarterfinals if they all progress.
"I'm really happy I've played well ... I think I deserve my place in the main draw," Wickmayer said.
"I'm really happy with the way I've handled everything. It's been a really tough time in the last couple of months.
"Coming here and starting the qualifiers wasn't easy for me. I just tried to take it the positive way."
Clijsters will play Valerie Tetreault in the opening round after the Canadian advanced through the qualifiers.
Briton Andy Murray, Russia's Nikolay Davydenko and Serbian Ana Ivanovic also drew qualifiers.
Murray will take on South African Kevin Anderson, Davydenko meets German Dieter Kindlmann and Ivanovic faces American Shenay Perry.
Louk Sorensen ensured Ireland would have a rare representative at a grand slam when he reached the men's singles draw by defeating New Zealand's Daniel King-Turner 6-4, 7-6.
The Australian Open starts tomorrow.
