Wildcard for Del Potro

THE Shanghai Rolex Masters has awarded its first wildcard to Juan Martin del Potro for this year’s event to be held at the Qizhong Tennis Center in suburban Minhang District on October 8-16, organizer Shanghai Juss Event announced yesterday. The Argentine is ranked 142nd in the ATP standings but is a favorite of many local fans who have nicknamed him “big pineapple” as the pronunciation of his name is similar to the fruit’s intonation in Chinese. The 27-year-old has been hampered by wrist injuries for the past three years. The annual ATP 1000 event will feature the world’s top ranked players, including No. 1 Novak Djokovic and No. 2 Andy Murray as well as Stanislas Wawrinka and Rafael Nadal.
