Williams, Sharapova advance

Serena Williams advanced to the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open by beating Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1, 6-3 yesterday.

The top-seeded Williams, who is a two-time champion in Madrid, broke the Spaniard’s serve four times and saved three break points.

Williams is playing in her third tournament since clinching her sixth Australian Open title, and 19th Grand Slam singles title overall.

The top-ranked American will next meet either fourth-seeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic or Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania.

Earlier, defending champion Maria Sharapova advanced to the semifinals by defeating Caroline Wozniacki 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

The third-seeded Russian, who is chasing an 11th WTA title on clay, will next play either Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia or Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic.

Late on Wednesday, top-seeded Roger Federer made an early exit after a narrow, second-round loss to Nick Kyrgios.

The 20-year-old Australian ended Federer’s hopes of a fourth title at the Spanish tournament by rallying for a 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (12) victory.

Kyrgios is in form, having reached the final at the Estoril Open before losing to Richard Gasquet. The 2014 Wimbledon quarterfinalist also relinquished his status as the ATP’s highest-ranked teenager by turning 20 last week.

Federer said his problem was that “I couldn’t return his first serve,” adding: “Just a horrible performance on the return.”

In a late match, second-seeded Andy Murray beat Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany 6-4, 3-6, 6-0, his second win over the German player in three days. He beat Kohlschreiber at the Munich Open on Monday to capture his first clay court title.
