Wozniacki, Kerber into Pan Pacific semifinals
SECOND-SEEDED Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark reached the Pan Pacific Open semifinals by beating eighth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain 6-3, 6-3 in Tokyo yesterday.
Wozniacki was in control from the start, breaking her opponent three times in the opening set.
“It was a little like playing chess,” said Wozniacki, who won the tournament in 2010. “We opened up the court and tried to outplay each other.”
The US Open finalist will next face another Spaniard Garbine Muguruza. “She’s been playing well all week.” Wozniacki said of Muguruza. “I need to make her run, take the ball early, need to serve and return well.”
Muguruza, despite 10 double-faults, defeated Casey Dellacqua of Australia 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
Top-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany also advanced, beating sixth-seeded Dominika Cibulkova 6-3, 6-0. She will next take on former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic after the Serbian third seed defeated Czech Lucie Safarova, the seventh seed, 6-3, 6-2.

Lepchenko lost an opening-set tiebreaker but she came back with a vengeance to win 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-2 and set up a semifinal against fellow American Christina McHale. McHale advanced after her opponent, 4th-seeded Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia retired at 6-2, 2-0.
The result means former Wimbledon finalist Radwanska, who also lost to Lepchenko in July, is yet to successfully defend any one of her 14 career titles.
