Wozniacki, Stakhovsky take titles
CAROLINE Wozniacki finished off her preparations for this week's US Open by capturing her second title in less than a week on Saturday.
The 20-year-old Dane, No. 1 seed for the season's final grand slam starting in New York today, defeated Russia's Nadia Petrova 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in New Haven, Connecticut, to win the Pilot Pen title for the third year in a row.
The men's title was later won by Sergiy Stakhovsky after the Ukrainian beat Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Stakhovsky is unbeaten in four career ATP finals, including a win in Hertogenbosch this year.
Wozniacki's New Haven title came hot on the heels of her rain-delayed Rogers Cup triumph in Montreal last Monday.
The Dane made the final of last year's US Open and has been the form player on this year's US hardcourt series. The world No. 2 will pocket a US$1 million bonus as the leading points scorer if she wins at Flushing Meadows.
"I've had two victories in two weeks and three victories in four weeks," she told reporters. "I feel I'm in great shape and playing well. Hopefully I can continue the next few weeks."
Petrova, who received a last-minute wildcard entry into the tournament, was playing her first final since 2008.
Stakhovsky, meanwhile, became the first Ukrainian to win two tournaments in the same season since Andrei Medvedev in 1994.
"I'm really glad to win this title," he said. "It pushed me to another level again."
