Wozniacki reaches Pan Pacific semis
TOP-SEEDED Caroline Wozniacki was given an easy path into the Pan Pacific Open semifinals yesterday when Agnieszka Radwanska retired with a left foot injury in the first set in Tokyo.
Trailing 0-5, the sixth-seeded Radwanska of Poland consulted with a trainer during the changeover before deciding she could not continue.
Wozniacki, aiming for her sixth title this year, will meet eighth-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in the semifinals today. Azarenka defeated American qualifier Coco Vandeweghe 6-2, 6-1.
"I'm happy about my performance, I feel I have played some great tennis here," Wozniacki said.
"Of course, I am sad for Agnieszka and hopefully she will be back soon."
Wozniacki, of Denmark, could overtake American Serena Williams as No. 1 in the world rankings if she lifts the trophy here and reaches the quarterfinals in Beijing next week.
"If I reach No. 1 that is great," Wozniacki said. "It's always been a goal of mine but if it doesn't happen this year there will be other chances."
In other matches, French Open champion Francesca Schiavone of Italy beat Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 7-5, 4-6, 7-5.
The fifth-seeded Schiavone went ahead 6-5 in the third set on a double-fault by Kanepi. She clinched the match with an service winner to the corner.
Schiavone will meet seventh-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia in the semifinals. Dementieva beat compatriot and No. 2 seed Vera Zvonareva 7-5, 6-2.
Opening match
In Nonthaburi, outside Bangkok, second seed Fernando Verdasco was eliminated in his opening match of the Thailand Open after suffering a 4-6, 4-6 reverse at the hands of Germany's Benjamin Becker yesterday.
The Spanish world No. 8, who was given a bye into the second round, looked sluggish and out of sorts as the unseeded Becker, a finalist in Bangkok in 2007, smashed nine aces past him to reach the last eight.
"It's always good to get a win over a top 10 player," Becker told reporters.
"It's not every week that it happens.
"It gives me confidence for the rest of the indoor season. I had beaten him before so I knew I had a chance today."
Verdasco was the third of the seeded players to be shown the door in Bangkok after former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina was beaten by Belgian Olivier Rochus on Tuesday on his comeback from a nine-month injury layoff.
Seventh seed Viktor Troicki of Serbia was knocked out earlier yesterday after a 6-7 (4), 2-6 defeat by Finn Jarkko Nieminen, who saved 14 of 15 break points to advance.
Top seed Rafael Nadal moved into the quarterfinals, however, with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Belgium's Ruben Bemelmans in his opening match.
