Wozniacki steals the limelight in Dubai
CAROLINE Wozniacki is back to doing what she does best - winning tournaments.
After dominating the WTA circuit in 2010, the 20-year-old Dane won her first singles title of 2011, beating an error-prone Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia 6-1, 6-3 in the Dubai Championships final on Sunday.
Wozniacki, who reclaimed the No. 1 ranking from Kim Clijsters yesterday but has yet to win a grand slam, was never seriously threatened by the 23rd-ranked Kuznetsova.
"I like winning, so of course it's important. It's important for me to win," Wozniacki said. "I hate to lose. For me to stand here as the winner of the tournament, it's a great feeling. I have the confidence. I know I'm playing well. The hard training is paying off. So I'm really pleased."
Wozniacki didn't drop a set during the week on her way to winning her 13th career title which featured eight of the world's top 10. It did not include Clijsters, nor the injured Williams sisters.
For Wozniacki, the win puts her back on track after several months in which she lost two big tournaments and briefly handed the No. 1 spot to Clijsters.
Forehand winner
In Memphis, Tennessee, Andy Roddick won the 30th title of his career with a diving forehand winner to cap a thrilling 7-6 (7), 6-7 (11), 7-5 win over red-hot Canadian Milos Raonic in the final of the RMK Championships on Sunday.
The top seed ended any chance of a third straight tiebreak by winning the tournament with a diving down-the-line forehand pass into the open court that left him with a grazed arm.
"I was very fortunate today," Roddick, 28, said after the match during an on-court interview. "I feel like I got outplayed for the better part of 2-1/2 hours today. I just stuck around and kept trying and that's all I could really do."
The 20-year-old Raonic, coming off his first tournament win last week at the San Jose Open, forced a third set by denying the American three match points in the second set.
