Youzhny creates quite a racket
VOLATILE Russian Mikhail Youzhny smashed the same racket nine times yesterday, sending splinters spiralling into the air and ball boys running for cover in a stunning French Open meltdown.
Youzhny boiled over after he slipped a set and 0-3 down to Tommy Haas in the last-16 with the random act of violence becoming an instant Internet hit.
"You try and do all you can to help yourself. I tried it this way, but it doesn't help really," said 29-year-old Youzhny. He insisted that his racket sponsor, Head, will not be concerned about the damage.
"I have been with Head for 20 years. You want me to go to another company and break their rackets?," he said.
Haas meanwhile was almost left shirtless after a mix-up over his playing gear.
"I dropped off my laundry two days ago after the (John) Isner match. I know it was late. But today, first match at 1100, I showed up in the locker room and I asked for my physio to get my laundry. He comes back and says, It won't be here till 2:00," said Haas.
"So then I was like, okay, that's great. So somebody had to go back to the hotel and bring the other four, five shirts I left there. They came in time before the match. I was happy to have clothes today to wear."
