Zhang eliminates defending champion, makes final 8

China’s Zhang Shuai knocked out defending champion Hsieh Su-Wei of Chinese Taipei 6-2, 6-2 yesterday at the Guangzhou Open in Guangdong Province.

Zhang won the match in a surprisingly quick 75 minutes.

Hsieh’s disappointing exit follows a golden year for the world No. 42, who was crowned women’s doubles Wimbledon champion earlier this year.

Zhang will face Briton Johanna Konta in the quarterfinals. Konta upset fourth-seeded Chinese Peng Shuai 6-1, 6-3.

Zheng Jie of China defeated Hungary’s Timea Babos 7-5, 7-6 (1) to reach the final eight. Third-seeded Laura Robson of Britain eliminated Zheng Saisai 6-3, 7-6 (4).

Meanwhile, the No. 2 seed Alize Cornet of France beat Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic 7-6 (4), 6-0.

Cornet will play Yvonne Meusburger next following the Austrian’s 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Serbia’s Vesna Dolonc.

Vania King of the US also reached the last eight after stopping Serbia’s Bojana Jovanovski 6-4, 0-6, 6-4.

Eighth seed Monica Puig overcame Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-2.

In Seoul, third-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia defeated local hope Lee Ye-ra 6-4, 6-1 at the Korea Open.

Also Italy’s Francesca Schiavone defeated Virginie Razzano of France 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-3.
