Zhang focuses on reaching Shanghai Masters

China’s top ranked male tennis player Zhang Ze advanced to the second round of the 2013 ATP International Challenge in Shanghai yesterday.

The tournament serves as a precursor for the annual Shanghai Masters which will be held at Qizhong Tennis Center in Minhang District from October 6 to 13.

The top Chinese player in the Challenge will be granted a wild card for the Masters.

Zhang Ze, currently ranked 182nd on the ATP tour, Shanghai native Wu Di, as well as Gong Maoxin and Bo Yan are the top Chinese players competing in the Challenge.

Zhang beat Japan’s Hiroki Kondo 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round and will next face either Lim Yong-kyu or Na Jung-woong, both of South Korea.

“I’m still recovering from a wrist injury and adjusting my physical status,” Zhang said. “I’ll try my best in the Challenge. It’s a good chance to play top players.”

Wu Di beat Gong Maoxin 6-2, 6-3 in another first-round clash yesterday.

The second best Chinese player in the tournament will also get a chance to compete in the Shanghai Masters. He will be given a wild card into the preliminary round, which offers a chance to make the main draw.
